What is pace?
Pace describes how fast you are moving by measuring the time it takes to cover a fixed distance. In running and walking, pace is usually expressed as minutes and seconds per mile (min/mi) or per kilometer (min/km) — for example, 8:30/mi means it takes you 8 minutes and 30 seconds to cover one mile.

The three core relationships are:
Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Time = Distance × Pace
Distance = Time ÷ Pace (or Distance = Time × Speed)
Where:
- Time is the duration of the activity (in seconds, minutes, or hours)
- Distance is how far you traveled (in miles, kilometers, meters, or yards)
- Pace is the time per unit distance (e.g. minutes per mile)
- Speed is the distance per unit time (e.g. miles per hour)
If you know any two of these values, you can always calculate the third.
Step by step: how to calculate pace
- Measure your time — record the total time in hours, minutes, and seconds (hh:mm:ss). Convert it to total seconds for easier math.
- Measure your distance — note the distance and its unit (miles, kilometers, meters, or yards).
- Convert distance to a consistent unit — for example, convert everything to meters: 1 mile = 1609.344 m, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 yard = 0.9144 m.
- Divide time by distance — Pace (in seconds per meter) = total seconds ÷ distance in meters.
- Convert to your preferred pace unit — multiply by the distance per unit to get seconds per mile or seconds per kilometer, then convert to a mm:ss format.
Example calculation
You run 10 kilometers in 50 minutes (3000 seconds).
- Pace in seconds per meter = 3000 ÷ 10000 = 0.3 s/m
- Pace per kilometer = 0.3 × 1000 = 300 s/km = 5:00/km
- Pace per mile = 0.3 × 1609.344 = 482.8 s/mi ≈ 8:03/mi
- Speed in km/h = 10000 m ÷ 3000 s × 3.6 = 12.0 km/h
- Speed in mph = 12.0 ÷ 1.609 = 7.46 mph
How to convert between pace and speed
Pace and speed describe the same motion from opposite directions. To convert:
- min/mi → mph: divide 60 by the decimal minutes per mile. Example: 8:30/mi = 8.5 min/mi → 60 ÷ 8.5 = 7.06 mph.
- mph → min/mi: divide 60 by the mph value. Example: 7.06 mph → 60 ÷ 7.06 = 8.5 min/mi = 8:30/mi.
- min/km → km/h: divide 60 by the decimal minutes per km. Example: 5:00/km = 5.0 min/km → 60 ÷ 5.0 = 12.0 km/h.
- km/h → min/km: divide 60 by the km/h value.
Remember that 8:00/mi and 8:00/km are very different speeds — always check the unit before comparing.
How to estimate your finish time
The finish time calculator projects your total race time from a recent split. The method assumes you maintain the same pace for the rest of the race:
- Divide the distance covered by the elapsed time to get your speed (in meters per second).
- Multiply your speed by the remaining distance to get the remaining time.
- Add the elapsed time to the remaining time for your estimated finish.
For example, if you cover 5 km in 25 minutes, your pace is 5:00/km. At that pace, a full 10K would take about 50:00, and a marathon (42.195 km) would take about 3:30:58. Note that most runners slow down over longer distances, so use this as a rough projection rather than a guarantee.

Use these as benchmarks when setting race goals. A 4-hour marathon requires roughly 9:09/mi (5:41/km), while a sub-2-hour half marathon needs about 9:10/mi (5:41/km).

Runners, walkers, and hikers usually prefer pace (min/mi or min/km) because it directly tells you how long a known distance will take — useful for planning splits and predicting finish times. Cyclists and drivers usually prefer speed (mph or km/h) because it matches what instruments and signs display.
